Launching a business from zero: what to do before your first ad spend
Most launch mistakes are made before sales even start. Six steps worth taking before the first advertising budget.
There is an idea, there is energy, and you want to get to market as fast as possible. Usually the first money goes on a website, an identity and ads. But most launch mistakes are made earlier, when the business hasn’t yet answered a few basic questions.
1. Check the market and demand
Who already solves this problem for customers? How much does it cost? What is missing in existing solutions? Conversations with potential customers at this stage give more than any polished report. The aim is not to confirm the idea but to find where it is weak.
2. Do the maths on the business model
How much you earn per customer, what it costs to win one, when the business breaks even. These numbers will be rough, but without them you can’t tell how much to spend on marketing and under what conditions the model works.
3. Define positioning and the offer
Who you are for, how you are different and why a customer should buy now. If this isn’t done before launch, ads will be expensive and the message vague. An offer is not a discount; it is clear value for a clear price.
4. Lay the brand foundation
At the start you don’t need a big brand book. You need a name, a tone of voice, a basic visual direction and a few key messages. That is enough for the business to look coherent and be easy to recognise.
5. Plan a minimal marketing launch
Pick two or three channels where your audience definitely is, instead of being everywhere. Decide what to test first: the offer, the price or the channel. A small budget, clear hypotheses and quick conclusions work better than a big all-in launch.
6. Agree on the metrics with yourself
What will success look like after 30, 60 and 90 days? Number of leads, cost per customer, repeat purchases? When metrics are set in advance, decisions are made on numbers, not emotions.
Common launch mistakes
- Design and website first, understanding the customer later.
- A product for “everyone”, which means for no one.
- The whole budget in month one without testing hypotheses.
- No system for repeat sales from day one.
From idea to launch. From launch to growth.
Build from zero takes the founder through all of these steps: from market analysis and the business model to positioning, the brand foundation and the marketing launch. If you are at the start, it is better to go through them before the first ad spend.
